Archive?

Postby Marie » Fri Sep 19, 2014 3:22 am

I've seen a lot of site that - in order to prevent "necro-posting" (posting to 'dead' threads), they create an archive of posts, locking them so that they can be read but not replied to. I was wondering if y'all thought that this might be an idea. The software has the option to automatically move old topics to an archive after X number of days without posts (determinable by the admins).

Thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions?

Might depend on the topic. Some necro-stuff is good, since it means an old topic had value. But other things should not... I think leaving everything non-archived will be a good idea, and determine which forums should be archived.

I think having an archive section for each folder is a good idea. Perhaps a default of 30 days with out a reply?

To the polls! As long as things can be searched for, it is all good.

Fine, archive away. It's nice to sit back and watch progress...

BTW as a side note I was viewing this in Tapatalk when I posted and it had no notification that there was a poll attached to this thread. :)

I'm undecided but leaning towards archiving as long as a thread can be resurrected, even if by simply starting a similar thread and providing a link to the archived thread. I go into the YahooGroups thread history all the time when working Doc issues. and have in the past resurrected them when necessary.

If the topic is moved to the archive, it becomes locked and cannot be resurrected. In a sense, the archive is for review only.

Yep. I understood that. My reference to resurrecting a thread is more of a pseudo resurrection, considering that my post mentioned starting a NEW, and similar, post and including a link to the archived thread.

Now if you're saying that won't be possible I'm not sure what you mean, unless your not intending to allow links to archived threads at all . . . Makes it more difficult to maintain a history if you can only read the archive as an individual and not point anyone back to it . . .
